Reservation & Cancellation Policies:

Advanced reservations for any trip is strongly recommended, though not always required. A deposit in the amount of 50% of your total trip cost is required to hold your reservation. Balance is due upon arrival. We accept VISA, MasterCard, Discover, & American Express cards.

All rides originate at Rio Grande Headquarters, off NM Hwy 522-Mile Marker 15

Please plan to arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled ride time.

Mornings and late afternoons can still be cool, so layer your clothing accordingly. Bring 1-2 Liters of water per person, and we will provide bags for you to place that in along with anything else you might want to take. We discourage backpacks or fanny pack. Explore the Sangre de Cristo Mountains & The Taos Plateau

La Lama Hills
North of Taos, NM

1 Hour Beginner Ride

Wander through the pinon & juniper forest along the gentle outer slopes of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains. Our focus here is to provide you and your family with a safe, gentle introduction into the world of horseback riding.


Red River State Fish Hatchery
South of Questa, NM

2 Hour Ride

Surprisingly rewarding Trail Ride! Enjoy an energizing ride through Juniper and Ponderosa Pine forests on this outing above the Red River Gorge. A great couple of hours in the saddle.


3 Hour Ride

With endless territory to explore, take a little longer in the hill tops and Upper Mesa expanses to explore the Land of Enchantment from the saddle.


Cebolla Mesa spreads across the Taos Plateau

3 Hour Ride

Cebolla Mesa host us for a tour across a portion of the Taos Plateau. The views of Northern New Mexico from here are simply breathtaking. Ride across history to the Rio Grande Gorge overlook during this three hour ride.


4 Hour Ride

This ride is designed for the equestrian enthusiast. Four hours in the saddle offer both river overviews and possibly the confluence of the Red River and the Rio Grande! Experience sweeping landscapes stretching across the Taos Plateau, viewing up to the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and back across to the Brazos and Tusas Mountains in the west.


Half-Day with Lunch

As with all the trails and paths that we cover while in the saddle, Cebolla Mesa offers miles & miles of intrigue. Stay a little longer and enjoy an excellent lunch from the saddlebags and a little extra time with your mount and fine company.

Sunset 2 Hour Ride

A perfect end to a busy day around Taos & the Enchanted Circle. Cebolla Mesa offers outstanding vistas in all directions. Catch the changing hues at day's end with Rio Grande Stables.

San Cristobal Canyon Trail, the Northern slope of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Taos, New Mexico

Half-Day with Lunch or Dinner

Truly a quality experience away from the crowds & bustle of town. Ascend the trail while escaping into the harboring boughs of the San Cristobal Canyon. Home to one of the pristine birth places of the Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout, San Cristobal Canyon is the essence of mountain freshness. There is no other location as well suited for a gourmet meal straight from the Saddle Bags. Arrive 45 minutes prior to ride time.

All Day Rides

Tough & Rugged or Relaxed & Immense

A truly stimulating experience, whether climbing to the charming meadows of Gold Hill  or traversing the classic Cebolla Mesa to the Rio Grande Gorge overlook. Come saddle up for a day exploring the mountain trails of the Sangre De Cristo Mountains or the Cebolla Mesa. A full day of equestrian adventure, grand views, challenging trail and possible wildlife sightings. We bring the lunch, you bring the camera.   *We offer All Day rides to Wheeler Peak; the tallest peak in New Mexico, to experienced horseback riders later in the season.  We do not guarantee a 'summit' on every ride due to unforeseen weather and/or trail conditions. Call for details.

Taos Ski Valley Sundays

Beginning in July, Rio Grande Stables will offer Horseback Rides in the Ski Valley each Sunday.
